Immigration Lit Circle Reading Response

Quote 1#- So why can't you talk to the nice people from Kentucky and make something of yourself?-American Priest Page16

Response 1#-
This quote shows how a lot of people are going to treat Frank.Like for example the priest treats him like if he was a stupid dog that doesn't know anything.People in America will try to force there idea against Frank. Also this quote can mean that people will might also give him god advice. This is connected to my life because I don't know usually the new fads or way of saying things and people always say you didn't know that or why don't you do that. And I always get good advice and bad ones from people.Like Frank is getting advice from the priest.

Question 1#-
Do you think that it is right to force your idea to a person like what the priest did to Frank?

Quote 2#-
Goddam, he's gotta pay his check. where's his goddam wallet? Back pocket, kid. hand it to me.-waiter at the Dempseys page 25

Response 2#-
I think it is rude to frank because after what the waiter said frank said I can't rob a priest. This is harsh and I think the waiter had a harsh day and this is what he really feels in the end of the day. This is what I think the character waiter has to face upon everyday. I think the waiter's action that he did was harsh and cruel. The reason why I think it was harsh was because it sound like he is yelling at the Frank and also he did not say it kindly.

Question 2#-
Do you think that It is nice to speak rudely to there customer and ask a kid to steal the priests money?

  1. Quote #1:
You have a good idea there. Just make sure that next time you reread the blog post to yourself OUT LOUD, it will help you with grammar and spelling. Other than that I agree with you 90%. I can predict that people will see frank as an uneducated immigrant and give him strong suggestions on how to live life. The 10% that I don’t agree with you is there because I don’t think people (The Priest) are talking to him as if he’s a stupid dog. I think people know he is a young adult that can learn and live by himself. People only wish to guide him along the long, confusing path that is the life of an immigrant in New York.
    Question #1:
In the situation that the characters were in I think the actions of the priest were appropriate. He only wanted the best for Frank and he knew that many good things could come from talking to the rich people. I think he also saw it as a good learning experience because Frank wasn’t yet used to talking to people from America. Over all in that particular situation, with so many positive outcomes from talking to 2 people it was ok.
    Quote #2:
You have the same ideas as me. The waiter was nice to the priest mainly because he was a priest. When the priest fell asleep he became another fat man causing problems. The waiter was tiered after a long day at work and he really just wanted him to pay and get out. Because of the he talked rudely to Frank and asked him to take out the priests wallet. Frank still saw the priest as a priest and was aware of the authority he had. That’s why he said I can’t rob a priest. In the end I think you under stood the scene as I did but in addition I learned a lot about that waiter as a person.
    Question #2:
I can understand the actions of the waiter but it wasn’t necessary. He easily could have solved the problem another way. Waiters should never talk to customers like that and he wouldn’t have gotten away with it now a days. Frank isn’t a kid; he’s 19 and old enough to drink. However the waiter still shouldn’t have asked Frank to commit an innocent crime. The way he talked to Frank was wrong and he sure used the word goddamn a lot even though he was in the presence of a priest.

  2. Quote #1:So why can't you talk to the nice people from Kentucky and make something of yourself?-American Priest Page16

Response/Comment:In my opinion, this instance is simply a priest who sees an opportunity to help, what looks to him, like a struggling young man looking to make his own in America. He sees that the Protestants from Kentucky are wealthy, and could most likely provide for him a secure job, and would certainly be in his best interest to go and make conversation with them. I think this is an act of kindness, and he is only looking out for Frank's best interest.
Question #1:Do you think that it is right to force your idea to a person like what the priest did to Frank?

Answer: My opinion on whether or not it is right for someone to force there ideas onto someone else, is I disagree. You should not force your ideas/will on anyone. That is my opinion on your direct question. But, I wouldn’t say the priest was at all forcing his ideas on him. It seemed to me he was simply suggesting, that Frank McCourt talk to the Protestants from Kentucky.

Quote #2:Goddam, he's gotta pay his check. where's his goddam wallet? Back pocket, kid. hand it to me.-waiter at the Dempseys page 25

Response/Comment:I think that this is just insulting and absurd. This is a customer he is cursing at, and the customer is right in front of him. However I can understand where he is coming from. Let’s look at it from the waiters perspective. He is simply a waiter, and all he wants to do is get paid to do his job, for customers to let him do his job, and get tips. The priest made it very difficult to do his job. The restaurant has to get paid their check which the priest hasn’t done because he is passed out and is drunk. This is very frustrating because you don’t want them to not pay at all, and you also don’t even know if they have the money to pay, let alone give him a tip. The waiter and other restaurant employees also will have to pick him up, and put him in a taxi, and this is really frustrating because the tip doesn’t even cover all the hassles that have come with it. This still makes their job much more difficult. Take all this into account, it is easy to understand why he said this, and asked Frank to grab his wallet. If you were in the waiter place, you might let a few curse words slip out as well.

Question #2:Do you think that It is nice to speak rudely to there customer and ask a kid to steal the priests money?

Answer:No, I don’t think it is nice to speak rudely of a costumer, and steal their money. However, in the book it is not stealing because the kid was with the priest, they were the same eating party, so it isn’t really stealing. I do find it rude to speak of a costumer in the costumers unconscious body the way the waiter, but like I said before, you have to understand where the waiter is coming from.
